Tips For Recovering From Whiplash

Are you recovering from whiplash? Unfortunately, there are many negative outcomes when you’re involved in a car accident – both mentally and physically. Whiplash occurs when your head moves backwards and forwards in one violent motion (much like a whip). This sharp action puts pressure on muscles and ligaments in the neck. As neck muscles and ligaments are stronger in men, women are more susceptible to whiplash.

Symptoms are often pain and stiffness but aren’t always apparent straight after impact; the effects can come to light as late as the next day. Whiplash can cause back pain, headaches, dizziness and even blurred vision in some cases.

So what can you do to make it easier on yourself?

This first thing to do is ask your doctor. They’ll be able to determine the severity of the whiplash. If you are in serious pain, you may be prescribed painkillers to take the edge off for the first few days. In extreme cases muscle relaxants such as diazepam can be issued.

Contrary to popular belief, keeping your head still and reducing movements will prolong your recovery. Of course, that’s not to say you should be doing anything strenuous which will put further pressure on your neck. But gentle exercises of the neck are encouraged by experts. Gentle exercises include neck rotations and side, forward and back bending.

The sleep you get at night is an extremely important part of the recovery process. Finding a comfy position where your neck is supported can take a while. Make sure you have firm pillows too that will give you support for the whole night.

Even your sitting position can heavily affect your recovery. Sitting up-right has never been more important than when you are suffering from whiplash. Sitting correctly in your chair can help you find the correct posture for your neck and spine; this is particularly important for back pain.

If you do return to work and spend much of it in front of a computer, make sure your eyes are in line with the monitor. This will help you avoid placing your neck in an unusual position for long periods of time. You can do so by raising or lowering your chair or monitors.

Everyone’s bodies are different so recovery time can vary widely. But if you remain active and action these tips, you’ll be back to normal before you know it.
